Following a gunman opened fire, security procedures were put in place. The UT campus has been locked up for safety. A weapon was fired within the library, by one or possibly two gunmen. Despite spraying bullets around the library, the shooter ended up killing only themselves. The university and areas around UT-Austin are locked down to keep students and residents safe.
UT school shooting in library
A masked shooter walked to the Perry-Castaneda library at UT-Austin. This was just as early morning classes were starting. There are conflicting reports as to if there were one or two shooters. The UT shooter was carrying an assault rifle. Reportedly, this weapon was an AK-47. The shooter allegedly shot himself after sending gunfire to the floor at the library. Police are still on the lookout for a possible second shooter.
One death in UT school shooting
Thus far, the only injury reported in the University of Texas firing is the gunman in the library. A number of witnesses encountered the shooter as they ran across university. Reports are that the individual was firing at the ground, not at people. SWAT teams have been called into the University of Texas, as have all emergency services.
Lockdown of campus instituted
A lockdown of campus was instituted as soon as the firing begun. Pupils were asked to stay as safe as possible. Alerts were sent to pupils and faculty informing them of the lockdown. This alert was sent via email, text message, and Twitter. The text message alert integrated a warning to lock your doors. The alert also told off-campus pupils to “STAY AWAY.” The lockdown caused by the UT shooting will continue for at least a few hours, possibly until the possible second gunman is found or confirmed to not exist.
