Solid Rock church struck by lightning, Big Butter Jesus starts on fire

In Monroe, Ohio, Touchdown Jesus has burned to the ground when lightning struck the statue. The Solid Rock Church was lit on fire by the flaming Touchdown Jesus as well. The damages are estimated at $ 700,000 – and nobody was injured.

Lightning strike begins Big Butter Jesus fire

Taller than the church within the area, the Touchdown Jesus statue was over 60 feet tall. A large thunderstorm created lightning that was attracted to the tall statue. The characteristic Styrofoam that gave Big Butter Jesus the golden color was effortlessly ignited. Fire crews were on the scene within six minutes of getting the call that Solid Rock Church and Touchdown Jesus were burning down.

Church and statue both damaged by fire

As the welcoming statue for the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, OH, Big Butter Jesus was built in 1992. The 62- foot tower of flames also started. The building didn’t get damaged too badly, but a lot of electronics were damaged. The church announced this morning the damage will cost $ 700,000 to repair. The church does intend on “fully rebuilding” anything that was damaged – including Big Butter Jesus.

Restorations prepared for Big Butter Jesus

The “King of Kings” statue – better known as Big Butter Jesus – was at first built in 2004. The “Big Butter Jesus” sculpture was built by a sculptor known for his work with Disney and Caesar’s Palace. The Big Butter Jesus was scheduled for repair work later this year. At one point, the Solid Rock Church did submit their sculpture for the Guinness Book of World Records, but the sculpture was disqualified because it was half-bodied… perhaps this can be a chance for Solid Rock Church to get the “World’s Largest Christ” title?.
